Camp Cody, near Deming in Luna County, New Mexico, was a 1918 training ground of tents, barracks and drill fields laid out across open desert. The army named it for William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody, the frontier showman who had died in January 1917. Its ranks were built largely around National Guard units called in from several Western states, so men who had enlisted as neighbors from one home state drilled side by side in a federal army. Dust storms and summer heat were constant hardships, and families in the Southwest followed the camp's news in local papers as the war in Europe dragged on.
