Camp Cody stood on the desert outside Deming, in Luna County, southwestern New Mexico, in 1918. The United States had entered the First World War the year before, and the army built the camp in 1917 to train soldiers in large numbers. The region was still close to the border troubles that followed Pancho Villa's raid on Columbus, New Mexico, in 1916, and many of the men trained there were prepared for service in France. Deming, a railroad town on the El Paso and Southwestern line, had a population of only a few thousand, so the arrival of thousands of soldiers changed its streets, shops and boarding houses. That autumn, influenza spread through military camps across the country, and Camp Cody was among the places hit hard.
