Tyrone, in the Burro Mountains of Grant County, New Mexico, was a copper mining camp in 1918, built around the open pit and concentrating works that Phelps Dodge had developed in the years before the First World War. Wartime demand for copper kept the company's operations busy, and the camp drew miners, millmen, and their families from across the Southwest and from Mexico. Its work life was organized by the company, with housing, stores, and services laid out for a workforce that depended on a single employer. The town sat a short distance from Silver City, the county seat, which served as the commercial and legal center for the district. Residents in 1918 would have known Tyrone first as a copper town, and they lived through the influenza outbreak that swept the country that autumn.
