In 1921 Santa Fe was holding its Fiesta around the Plaza, the open square at the heart of a town sitting at about 7,000 feet in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Local civic and arts leaders had revived the celebration in 1919 to build a public occasion around the city's older Hispanic traditions, and by 1921 it drew crowds from across northern New Mexico. Visitors could walk from the Plaza past the Palace of the Governors to the Museum of Fine Arts, completed in 1917 a short distance away, a sign of the town's growing reputation as a center for painting and crafts. Residents of the day knew Santa Fe as a small capital where Spanish-speaking families, Pueblo neighbors, and Anglo newcomers shared one public life.
