Santa Fe, the capital of New Mexico, was holding its Fiesta in 1921, a celebration of the city's Spanish colonial founding and of Don Diego de Vargas's return in 1692 after the Pueblo Revolt. The fiesta had been revived only a few years earlier, after lapsing, and it drew Hispano families, Pueblo visitors, and newcomers into parades, costumed pageantry, and public gatherings. The city's economy still leaned on sheep ranching, trade, and government work, but the arrival of the railroad branch line in 1880 and a growing number of artists and writers had begun to draw tourists to the old adobe town. Residents of the day knew Santa Fe as the oldest capital in the United States, a place where old Spanish customs and modern American statehood stood side by side.
