Tucumcari, New Mexico, in 1913 was a railroad and ranching town on the high plains of the eastern part of the state. New Mexico had become the 47th state only the previous year, in 1912, and local residents were still adjusting to statehood and the county government that had made Tucumcari the seat of Quay County. The Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific line had brought the rails through the town and made it a shipping point for cattle, sheep, and wool from the surrounding grasslands. Homesteaders were arriving in the area during these years, hoping to turn dry plains into farms, and the town's stores, depots, and churches served that growing population. Much of daily life revolved around the trains, the stock pens, and the merchants who supplied both ranch families and newcomers.
