Santa Fe in 1915 was less than three years into its role as capital of the new State of New Mexico, which had entered the Union on January 6, 1912. The town's economy still rested on government offices, trade, sheep and wool, and the visitors the railroad brought to the plaza and its shops. Local leaders were debating how to present the old adobe town to outsiders, and the Palace of the Governors, long the seat of colonial and territorial rule, was being kept as a public museum. Many residents took pride in the town's age, while also worrying that the modern city would overwhelm the Spanish and Pueblo character that drew people in the first place.
