Fort Bayard, in Grant County in southwestern New Mexico, was an Army post in the early 1900s, set in the hills above the mining town of Silver City. The dry, high-altitude air drew doctors to the area, and the Army had turned the post's hospital into a center for treating soldiers with tuberculosis, so patients came from across the country seeking the climate. New Mexico was still a territory until it became a state in 1912, and the copper and silver mines nearby drove the local economy, bringing workers, supply wagons, and rail traffic into the region. The people of Silver City and the surrounding ranches knew the fort as a neighbor whose troops, medical staff, and patients were part of daily life, and the post's hospital work gave the place a reputation well beyond the county.
