Gila Forest Camp in 1918 sat within the Gila National Forest in southwestern New Mexico, a reserve created in the first years of the century and managed by the U.S. Forest Service. Daily work centered on the forest's resources: timber for mines and local building, and grazing, with cattle and sheep driven into the high country each season under Forest Service permits. Rangers and crews also kept up trails and watched for fires, while nearby mining centers such as Silver City depended on copper and the wider nation was absorbed in the war effort. That autumn, the influenza epidemic reached New Mexico as it did much of the country, and many communities closed schools and public gatherings to slow its spread.
