Tyrone, in the Burro Mountains of Grant County, New Mexico, was in 1918 a company mining town built around the large open-pit copper operation that Phelps Dodge had opened there only a few years earlier. Copper was in heavy demand during the First World War, and the mine drew workers from across the Southwest, many of them Mexican and Mexican American laborers who lived in separate sections of the camp from the company's staff. Company housing, stores, and a hospital were laid out on the hillsides, and the town's daily life revolved around the shift whistles and the ore trains moving down from the pit. Like much of the country that year, Tyrone was shaken by the influenza epidemic, and it was still a young place, with much of its growth still ahead.
