Albuquerque in 1915 was a young city of the newly admitted state of New Mexico, which had joined the Union in 1912. Its growth rested on the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, whose main line and repair shops made the town a freight and passenger hub, and on the Alvarado Hotel near the depot, run by the Fred Harvey company. Residents still measured the town against the old Spanish plaza in Old Town, founded in 1706, and against the Sandia Mountains rising to the east. The panorama shows a community caught between its adobe past and the railroad-driven growth that was reshaping it.
