Artesia, New Mexico, in 1913 was a young farming town in the Pecos Valley, named for the artesian wells that gave the settlement its water. Its economy rested on irrigated fields, orchards, and alfalfa, and the railroad line that ran through the valley carried produce and supplies to and from the town. New Mexico had become the 47th state the year before, so residents were settling into new state and county institutions while still building churches, schools, and stores on land that had been open range only a short time earlier. This wide view of the townsite would have shown neighbors a place they measured by new blocks, growing fields, and the promise that water from the ground could turn dry country into a living.
