The *Machias* was a steel gunboat of the U.S. Navy's post-1880s rebuilding, a smaller warship than the battleships the gallery's subject heading suggests. This 8 x 10 inch glass negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for documenting American places and people in the decades around 1900. Its record dates the image to between 1893 and 1901, and the company's catalog entry from 1901 supports that range. The plate shows the ship as the Navy's new steel fleet was taking shape, when a gunboat like this one served as a patrol and coastal-defense vessel.
