Few Americans had seen the Amazon basin up close before Theodore Roosevelt traveled there in 1913 and 1914, and this lantern slide, made by his son Kermit on that trip, gives a glimpse of it. The expedition followed the River of Doubt, a largely uncharted tributary that was later renamed the Rio Roosevelt in his honor. Roosevelt, weakened by illness and a leg injury, returned home in 1914 with a remarkable record of the journey. Glass lantern slides like this one were projected before audiences during lectures, so the image was meant to be shared as much as seen.
