This lantern slide documents Theodore Roosevelt's 1913 expedition to Brazil, and it was made by his son Kermit, who joined the trip. The journey, later called the Roosevelt-Rondon Scientific Expedition, followed the River of Doubt, an uncharted tributary in the Brazilian interior that was mapped and renamed Rio Roosevelt in his honor. Roosevelt went after losing the 1912 presidential race as a Progressive candidate, and the trip was physically punishing: he suffered a serious leg injury and a tropical infection and nearly did not survive. Lantern slides like this one were often projected at public lectures, so images such as this carried the expedition's story back to audiences in the United States.
