Taken by Kermit Roosevelt during his father's 1913 expedition to Brazil, this lantern slide records a journey that was far from the White House routines Theodore Roosevelt had known as president. The trip, later known as the Roosevelt-Rondon Scientific Expedition, followed the River of Doubt through the Brazilian interior, with the former president joining Brazilian explorer Cândido Rondon to map unexplored waters and collect natural history specimens. Glass lantern slides like this one were used to project images for audiences during lectures, so pictures from the trip reached listeners long after the men returned.
