Kermit Roosevelt made this glass lantern slide during the 1913 expedition his father led into the Brazilian interior, a journey that followed the uncharted River of Doubt. Theodore Roosevelt had left the presidency in 1909 and lost his bid for another term on the Progressive ticket in 1912, so the trip was a deliberate return to exploration after a bruising campaign. The expedition was grueling: fever, supply shortages and a serious leg infection nearly killed the former president. Lantern slides like this one were projected for audiences at lectures, so the image was meant to carry the story of the journey to people who would never make the trip themselves.
