Roosevelt's 1913-1914 expedition down the River of Doubt in Brazil is the event this slide records, and it was photographed by his son Kermit, who accompanied him on the trip. The former president had left office in 1909 and went on the journey after a long exploration of the Amazon basin, when he was already in poor health from an earlier infection. The river was renamed Rio Roosevelt in his honor, and the expedition's hardships, including fever, shortage of supplies and a dangerous rapids passage, made it one of the more arduous journeys of his later life. The caption card's tracings mention insects, a reminder of the disease-carrying pests that plagued the party in the jungle.
