Roosevelt's 1913 expedition into the Brazilian interior, better known as the River of Doubt journey, is the setting for this glass lantern slide, a format that was then a standard way to project images for lectures and travel talks. The photographs from that trip were taken largely by his son Kermit, who accompanied him through the jungle and helped document a route that had never been fully mapped. Roosevelt had lost the 1912 presidential race and was looking for a demanding undertaking, and the expedition nearly cost him his health, leaving him with a lasting leg injury. Slides like this one carried the story of the journey to audiences across the United States.
