This lantern slide records Theodore Roosevelt during his 1913 expedition to Brazil, a trip that took him into the interior to map and explore the River of Doubt, now called the Rio Roosevelt. The photograph was taken by his son Kermit, who accompanied him on the journey. Glass lantern slides like this one were projected before audiences, and Roosevelt and his family used such images to share the expedition's story after the explorers returned. The trip was hard and dangerous, and Roosevelt's health suffered badly during it.
