This lantern slide records Theodore Roosevelt's 1913 expedition to Brazil, a journey taken after his unsuccessful 1912 presidential run as a Progressive. The party, working with Brazilian officer Cândido Rondon, traced the River of Doubt through the interior of Mato Grosso, a largely unmapped region at the time. Kermit Roosevelt, who accompanied his father, made the photograph, and such glass slides were projected before audiences to show the trip's landscapes and people after the party returned.
