Roosevelt's 1913 journey into the Brazilian interior, which Kermit Roosevelt documented with a camera, took the former president down the River of Doubt in Mato Grosso, a waterway that had been only partly mapped. The expedition, undertaken with Brazilian explorer Cândido Rondon, was grueling. Roosevelt fell ill with a serious infection and came close to dying before the group reached the end of the river. Lantern slides like this one were glass positives projected before audiences, so Roosevelt and his family could share the trip's images in lectures and talks after the men returned.
