This lantern slide records Theodore Roosevelt's 1913 expedition to Brazil, a journey he undertook after leaving the presidency and losing the 1912 election as the Progressive Party candidate. Roosevelt traveled with the Brazilian explorer Cândido Rondon to map and descend the River of Doubt, a dangerous jungle waterway in the Mato Grosso region. The photograph was taken by his son Kermit, who accompanied him, and glass lantern slides like this one were projected before audiences to present expedition images on the lecture circuit.
