Kermit Roosevelt took this lantern slide during his father's 1913 journey into the Brazilian interior, a trip that followed the River of Doubt through Mato Grosso. Four years after leaving the White House, Theodore Roosevelt joined the Brazilian explorer Cândido Rondon on an expedition marked by rapids, disease, and scarce supplies, and it left the former president seriously ill. Lantern slides like this one were glass positives projected before audiences, so pictures such as this let families and lecture crowds see remote country almost firsthand.
