Kermit Roosevelt, the former president's son, made this lantern slide during the 1913 to 1914 expedition to Brazil, so it shows the trip through a family member's eyes rather than a professional photographer's. The journey took Theodore Roosevelt deep into the interior to explore the River of Doubt, a largely uncharted tributary that was later renamed Rio Roosevelt in his honor. Made on glass for projection, lantern slides like this one were a common way to share travel images with audiences at lectures and club meetings before home snapshots became common.
