This lantern slide records Theodore Roosevelt's 1913 to 1914 expedition into the Brazilian interior, a trip that took him down the River of Doubt, a previously uncharted tributary of the Rio Paraguay. Kermit Roosevelt, who accompanied his father, made the image, and the glass slides were meant to be projected for lecture audiences back home. The journey was physically brutal: Roosevelt suffered a serious leg injury and a fever that nearly killed him, and the river was later renamed Rio Roosevelt in his honor.
