Kermit Roosevelt made this glass lantern slide on the Brazilian expedition of 1913 and 1914, when his father, former president Theodore Roosevelt, traveled into the country's interior with the explorer Cândido Rondon. The party set out to map the River of Doubt, a largely uncharted tributary of the Amazon basin, and the journey proved far harder than expected. Lantern slides like this one were projected before audiences during the period, so the image was meant to be seen on a screen as much as held in the hand.
