This lantern slide comes from Theodore Roosevelt's 1913 expedition to Brazil, where his son Kermit made the photograph. The trip followed Roosevelt's defeat in the 1912 presidential race and took him into the interior to map and descend the River of Doubt, a waterway later renamed Rio Roosevelt in his honor. Glass lantern slides like this one were projected before audiences during lectures, so images from the journey reached American viewers who could not make the trip themselves.
