Kermit Roosevelt made this lantern slide during the family's 1913 journey into the Brazilian interior, the trip that would become the Roosevelt-Rondon Scientific Expedition. Theodore Roosevelt had lost his bid for a third term as a Progressive in 1912 and turned to this months-long trek through largely unmapped country, which took him down a tributary later renamed the Rio Roosevelt. Glass lantern slides like this one were projected at lectures and gatherings, so the image was meant to be shared with audiences who would never see the forest or river firsthand.
