Few of the Roosevelt images in this collection were made by a member of the family behind the camera. This lantern slide from 1913 was taken by Kermit Roosevelt, the former president's son, during the Brazil expedition that followed Theodore Roosevelt's defeat for a third-party nomination in 1912. The trip, later known as the River of Doubt expedition, followed an uncharted tributary of the Amazon basin, and the rugged conditions it produced were part of its lasting reputation. Lantern slides like this one were projected for audiences, so the image was meant to be seen by a crowd, not just kept as a private record.
