Taken by Roosevelt's son Kermit, this glass lantern slide records the former president's 1913 journey into the Brazilian interior, the Roosevelt-Rondon Scientific Expedition, which mapped and descended the river later renamed Rio Roosevelt. The trip was physically punishing, and Roosevelt returned weakened by fever and a leg injury. Lantern slides like this one were projected before audiences during lectures, so images such as this helped carry the expedition's story to people who would never travel to the Amazon basin.
