This lantern slide, made from a photograph taken by Kermit Roosevelt, shows his father during the 1913 expedition to Brazil. Theodore Roosevelt had recently lost his bid for a third term as a Progressive Party candidate, and the trip took him into largely unmapped rainforest. Lantern slides like this one were glass positives projected for lectures and talks, so the image was meant to be shown to audiences as well as kept as a family record. The expedition, which explored the river now called Rio Roosevelt, drew attention to the difficulty of travel in the Amazon basin.
