Nathaniel Currier's 1851 lithograph takes its title from the bloomer, a costume of loose trousers gathered at the ankle under a knee-length skirt. Amelia Bloomer, a temperance and women's rights advocate in Seneca Falls, New York, promoted the outfit in her newspaper *The Lily* beginning in 1849, and the style drew wide attention in 1851. Currier, working under his own name before the firm became Currier & Ives, issued many prints like this one that treated women's dress reform as a comic spectacle. Viewers today can see both the popular fascination with the costume and the mockery it provoked.
