Winsted, a manufacturing town in the hills of northwestern Connecticut's Litchfield County, looked to its clock works and textile mills for most of its livelihood in 1914. The Gilbert Clock Company was among the local firms whose factories drew workers from the surrounding farms and neighboring villages. Highland Lake, just outside the center, had long served as a summer destination for residents who came to swim, boat, and picnic along its shores, reached by trolley and local roads. In the summer of 1914, the lake was a place where mill families could escape the heat of the valley, even as news of the war in Europe began to reach the town's newspapers.
