The title, "The Emigrants' Farewell," points to a scene of departure, one of the most familiar subjects in nineteenth-century popular prints. The record dates it to about 1883 and was made for copyright deposit at the U.S. Copyright Office, so it was meant to be reproduced and sold. The shelflist card links it to Major & Knapp, a New York firm that produced lithographs and engravings, though the record notes that this attribution is unverified. Images like this one, of families leaving home for a new life abroad, reflected the large waves of European emigration of the period and the emotional weight of parting from relatives who might never return.
