Prattsville, in the Catskill hills of Greene County, New York, took its name from Zadock Pratt, a tanner who built a leather works there and developed the village around it. Tanneries of this kind relied on hemlock bark from the surrounding forests, and the industry shaped the town's economy and landscape for decades. The title dates the view to 1844, though the shelflist card gives no date and names a "Parsons, C." whose connection to the print is unverified. The scene is a useful record of a small mountain community during the period when tanning and timber were central to local life.
