Ben Shahn's serigraph takes its subject from the Pleiades, the star cluster named in God's speech from the whirlwind in Job 38, where God asks, "Canst thou bind the sweet influences of Pleiades?" The sheet also carries the Hebrew text of Job 38:31-38, so the scripture and the constellation appear together. Shahn, a Lithuanian-born American painter and printmaker known for socially engaged work and Jewish themes, made the print around 1959 or 1960 in an edition of 75, signed by hand in red paint. It was later included in the 2002 Library of Congress exhibition *The Sweet Uses of Adversity*, which gathered images of the biblical Job.
