The print shows the bridge over the Almendares River at Havana, where the track of the Camino de hierro de la Habana crossed the water. That line was among the first railways in the Spanish Caribbean, opening in 1837 and linking the city to the agricultural interior, where sugar was shipped out through the port. Its bridges marked a new kind of engineering in a colony then dependent on river crossings, carts, and mule paths. The record gives no date or maker, so the print's exact year is uncertain, but its subject ties it to the early railway era in Cuba.
