Women playing lawn tennis on a Central Park court is the particular subject of this stereograph, dated around 1896. The sport had arrived from England in the 1870s and grew fashionable in American cities over the following decades, with women taking part alongside men. The card was published by A.S. Campbell of Elizabeth, New Jersey, as No. 249 in its series, and such cards were viewed through a stereoscope at home to create a sense of depth.
