Signs are the subject here, and the joke turns on them. The title promises a "delightful resort" for weary New Yorkers, but the engraving's focus on posted notices suggests a place where visitors were mostly told what they could not do. It ran in *Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper* on June 19, 1869, a weekly known for topical wood engravings. Central Park, designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux and opened in sections from the late 1850s, had become a favorite refuge from crowded city streets, so the satire points at a real tension between leisure and regulation.
