Few buildings in Central Park carry as much history as the Arsenal, a fortress-like stone structure set on a rise near the park's eastern edge. Built in the late 1840s to store militia arms and munitions, it later became the home of the park's administration, and it still stands among the paths and meadows at the park's center. This c1914 view by Irving Underhill, a photographer whose copyright registration appears on the record, shows the building in the park setting that the city's planners had hoped would give New Yorkers a refuge from the crowded streets. Look at how the stonework and the surrounding trees frame the structure, a reminder that the park was designed to blend the built and the natural.
