A covered colonnade sets this view of Central Park in Louisville, Kentucky, apart from the open lawns and winding paths that fill many park photographs of the period. Covered walks like this gave visitors shelter from sun and rain while still letting them enjoy the outdoors. The Detroit Publishing Company, which recorded many American towns and parks in the early 1900s, made this view on an 8 by 10 inch glass negative, and it shows the architecture and the unhurried pace of city park life before the automobile became common.
