Central Park in Louisville, Kentucky, belonged to a park system that the city built out in the decades around 1900, with landscape planning drawn from the Olmsted firm that also shaped many American urban parks. This view is one of the Detroit Publishing Company's large glass-plate negatives, made between 1900 and 1910, when the company traveled the country documenting towns, scenery and public places for sale as postcards and tourist prints. The large 8 by 10 inch format captured fine detail in lawns, walkways and trees, so the negative still shows how a Kentucky city presented its green space to visitors and residents at the turn of the century.
