A keeper appears to be tending an elephant's feet in this scene, a task that looks almost comical today. The Central Park Menagerie, which kept animals in the park for decades, drew New Yorkers eager to see exotic creatures up close. The title comes from caption data supplied by the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency of the early twentieth century, and it has not been independently verified. The glass plate preserves fine detail in the animal's skin and the handler's posture.
