Horseback riding on the bridle paths of Central Park is the subject here, a pastime that drew New Yorkers of many backgrounds to the park's winding trails. Olmsted and Vaux laid out the park with separate routes for riders, carriages and pedestrians, and the bridle paths became a fashionable place to be seen in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The picture is a glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency that supplied pictures to newspapers. The title comes from unverified notes the agency wrote on the negatives or caption cards, so the exact date and the riders are not recorded.
