Few hotels in Havana sat as squarely on the city's public life as the Gran Hotel Inglaterra, which looked out over the tree-lined Central Park. The Inglaterra had opened in the 1870s and drew travelers and local society alike. After the Spanish-American War brought large numbers of American visitors to the island, the hotel and the park became familiar sights to tourists. This glass negative came from the Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm known for its scenic views, and it records the years when Havana was changing under American influence.
