Maypole dancing in Central Park was a May Day custom, and this picture shows the version staged by the Public School Athletic League, which used its outdoor festivals to showcase organized play and physical training for schoolchildren. Founded in New York in 1903, the league promoted athletics and fitness in the city's public schools, and events like this one gave students a public stage. The photograph belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by a New York news photo service active in the early twentieth century. The record gives no date, so the exact year of the celebration is unknown.
