This glass negative records an open trench in Central Park, a subject that stands apart from the park's better-known views of lawns, lakes, and bridges. The record does not give a date, so the exact work is unknown, but trenching in the park usually meant laying or repairing pipes, drains, or utility lines beneath its paths and roadways. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the Bain News Service, a New York picture agency that sold news photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Its plain documentary focus on public works makes it a useful record of the park's maintenance.
