The Mall, a straight, tree-lined promenade that Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux laid out as a formal walk within Central Park, is the subject of this long panorama. Its 10-by-29-inch format suits the broad sweep of the double row of elms that gives the Mall its shade and rhythm. Made by the photographer Falk and registered for copyright on May 12, 1902, the print shows a park that by then was a favorite place for New Yorkers to stroll and be seen.
