Concrete business buildings line the edge of San Salvador's central park in this c. 1917 postcard, a sign of how the Salvadoran capital was changing in the early twentieth century. Coffee exports had brought money and commerce to the city, and builders increasingly turned to reinforced concrete, which was valued in a country prone to earthquakes. Commercial postcards like this one circulated widely at the time, so the scene reflects both the city's modernizing streets and the way its image was promoted abroad.
